RENAISSANCE TIMES      May 2005

STORM SEASON
It's getting close to stormy season.  If you plan to be away for any length of time, remember to remove your balcony furniture, plants, etc.  Our staff will not have time to remove these articles when the storms approach.

MEMORIAL DAY  MAY 30TH
The Association Management offices will be closed Monday, May 30th.  Maintenance personnel will not be available on that day (unless there is an emergency).  The Reception Desk will be covered.
Memorial Day, originally called Decoration Day, is a day of remembrance for those who have died in our nation's service. There are many stories as to its actual beginnings, with over two-dozen cities and towns laying claim to being the birthplace of Memorial Day.

While Waterloo N.Y. was officially declared the birthplace of Memorial Day by President Lyndon Johnson in May 1966, it's difficult to prove conclusively the origins of the day. It is more likely that it had many separate beginnings; each of those towns and every planned or spontaneous gathering of people to honor the war dead in the 1860's tapped into the general human need to honor our dead, each contributed honorably to the growing movement that culminated in General Logan giving his official proclamation in 1868. It is not important who was the very first, what is important is that Memorial Day was established. Memorial Day is not about division. It is about reconciliation; it is about coming together to honor those who gave their all.

BOARD OF DIRECTORS CHANGES
On March 31, 2005, Robert Nerthling, Vice President of the Renaissance I Board of Directors, resigned from the Board because he will be moving.  At the April 13, 2005 Board of Directors meeting, the Board unanimously appointed Llwellyn L. Green-Thapedi to serve for the remainder of Robert Nerthling's term, which ends in November 2005.

We wish Bob Nerthling the best of luck in his new home, and sincerely thank him for all the work he has done over the past years in support of the members of the Renaissance I Association.

A warm welcome is extended to Ms. Thapedi as the newest member of the Renaissance I Board of Directors.

POOL AND SPA
We are rapidly approaching that warm and wonderful poolside season.  As a reminder, glass containers of any kind are prohibited in the areas of the pool, patio, & spa.  Children under the age of 16 are not permitted in the spa.  Residents and guests in bathing attire are asked to wear a cover up when going to and from the pool, and bare feet are never permitted in the hallways, common rooms, or elevators.

QUARTERLY ASSESSMENTS
Owners are reminded that quarterly maintenance and reserve assessments are due on the first day of the quarter (January 1, April 1, July 1, and October 1) and if they are not received by the 15th day of that month, there will be a 5% penalty automatically added to the invoice.  If the invoice is not paid within 30 days of the due date, it will be turned over to the Association Attorney for collection.  Please do not rely upon any reminders from the Association that your payment is overdue.  Failure to receive an invoice is not a valid excuse for non-payment.

When it is necessary to turn an account over to the attorney for collection, mandatory charges will be made by the attorney for filing, correspondence, and related fees, which can add several hundred dollars to the indebtedness.  Because of the Association's fiduciary responsibility, we are unable to extend invoice payment deadlines.

NEW BIKE STORAGE RACKS
While still a work in progress as this is written, the Association Maintenance staff has been constructing new storage bar assemblies in the bike room that will make more space available.  The new bars will allow some bikes to be stored in a vertical orientation with their front wheel and fork positioned over a padded metal storage bar.

PETS
We appreciate those residents who are careful about following all of our pet rules.

According to Dr. Bonnie Beaver, a professor in the Department of Small Animal Medicine and Surgery at Texas A&M University, good sanitation is one of the best ways to prevent any problems with parasites.  That means that you must pick up after your pet without fail.  She says, "This prevents parasites that are shed in dog feces from seeding down into your grass or soil, thus causing a reinfestation."

Thank you in advance for keeping our grounds enjoyable for everyone!

UPDATE YOUR RECORDS
If you purchase a new vehicle or change your license tag, you must notify the Manager without delay to ensure that our security officers have the most current information and do not consider your vehicle illegally parked.

Also, if you are leaving for an extended period or have just returned, please notify the Manager so the Association records can be updated to reflect your current residency status.  The Manager is required to have an accurate record of all current building occupants for safety and security reasons.  The information is also used when sending out notices and correspondence that can be mailed rather than left at your door when you are away.

MOVIE NIGHT
From the director of Election and About Schmidt, Sideways is "A Comedy Masterpiece" and nominated for five Academy Awards.

A wine-tasting road trip through California's famed Central Coast takes an unexpected detour as Miles and Jack hit the gas enroute to their mid-life crises.  The comically mismatched pair soon find themselves drowning in wine, womenand laughter!

TRASH AND RECYCLING
As a reminder to our new residents, please do not leave trash in the hallways or floors of the trash chute room.  All boxes must be broken down and left in the designated "Cardboard" area in the Service Elevator lobby recycling located on the first floor. There are glass, aluminum, and plastic recycling containers also in this area.  Please conserve recycling space by flattening large plastic milk jugs, plastic bottles, and aluminum cans.  There is a "Newspaper Only" collection bin in the service elevator alcove on each floor.

CHANGE, CHANGE, & MORE CHANGE
Recently, with the Alinari construction and site preparation for the Hotel Indigo, the local Renaissance of Sarasota landscape has undergone a major change.  In most cases, coordination among the Association, the Alinari, and Hotel Indigo developers has been good, but occasionally there have been glitches.

The recent use by the Hotel Indigo contractors of vibrating machines to insert steel pilings along the periphery of the Hotel site resulted in considerable vibration inside the Renaissance Building. We have observed no evidence of physical damage to the building structure, but are seeking an independent opinion from our engineering consultants.  In addition, some encroachment onto Renaissance I property has occurred, and that is being addressed with the hotel developer.

Some residents were surprised to see that a number of parking spaces along the east side of the garage were temporarily fenced off with a Hotel Indigo construction trailer parked inside the fence.  These spaces were sold to the Hotel developer by the Renaissance developer as part of the Hotel site package, and Hotel Indigo eventually plans to use them for employee parking.

The remaining unfenced outside parking spaces on the east side of the garage is Master Association property (now controlled by the developer of the Alinari, who assumed Master Association status from the Wynnton Group when the undeveloped land within the Renaissance of Sarasota was sold last year.)  The Alinari developer has requested that Renaissance I residents and their guests park on Renaissance property only.

AND THEY'RE OFF
Win, place, or showit doesn't matter, as you will have a wonderful time at our 2nd Annual Derby Party on May 7th.  If your horse is feeling a little sluggish, don't worry, as you still may be a winner simply by wearing the perfect attire!  Don't miss out on the great food, beverages, fun, and excitement!

CANOPIES
No doubt you have noticed installation of the new awnings on the 3rd floor-parking garage.  There are five awnings in place with plans to install one or two awnings each week until completion.  The beige color of the awnings complement the building.

SCHEDULED EVENTS IN THE CLUB ROOM
When scheduled functions are being held in the Club Room and the double-doors to the lobby and second floor overlook are closed, residents who wish to access the pool patio or gas grill area are asked to use the doorway to the pool patio located across from the Business Center rather than to cut through the Club Room and intrude on private events. Thanks for your courtesy.

KEYS AT THE RECEPTION DESK
We have many new residents at the Renaissance who may not be aware of the policy that prohibits the leaving of keys at the Reception Desk   Association policy states that keys to apartments will be held at the Reception Desk only for designated service contractors and housekeepers.  Owners may not leave a spare key with the Receptionist or Security Officer for use by renters, realtors, friends, other residents, or relatives. If you want someone other than a designated service contractor or housekeeper to have one of your keys, please make arrangements personally to get one of your keys to them.

The required Key Release Authorization form is available at the Reception Desk or in the office.

Authorized keys will be stored in a locked container that will be accessible only to the Receptionist, the Security Officer, or Management staff. Those designated apartment keys will be signed out only to the service and housekeeping personnel that have been specifically authorized by the apartment owner. No one else may sign out a key under any circumstances. Because safety and security are important to everyone, we know that you will understand the necessity for consistent and strict adherence to these guidelines.
