Renaissance News - June 2002
DID YOU KNOW???
FATHER'S DAY The inspiration behind the celebration of Father's Day is owed at least partly to its slightly earlier counterpart, Mother's Day. When Sonora Louise Smart Dodd of Spokane, Washington, heard a sermon on setting aside a day to honor one's mother, it gave her the idea to petition a day to honor fathers. William Jackson Smart raised her and her five siblings by himself after her mother died in childbirth.
With support from the Spokane Ministerial Association and the YMCA, her efforts paid off, and on June 19, 1910, the first Father's Day was celebrated in Spokane. In 1972 Richard Nixon signed a presidential proclamation declaring the third Sunday of June as Father's Day.
Today, greeting card companies rejoice, and the sales of shirts, ties and electric razors increase considerably. However, the fact is that more collect calls are recorded on Father's Day than on any other day of the year! HAPPY FATHER'S DAY!!

WORK COMPLETED Garage Ramp: Two ramps have been installed at the Southwest corner of the garage. The ramps will assist our residents using carts or other wheeled objects through the gates.
Doors to Garage. New door closers were installed on the 2nd and 3rd floor doors from the parking garage into the building. The frames and locking mechanisms were also adjusted to ensure a smoother closing of the doors.
WORK IN PROGRESS Pond: Management has been in contact with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission to obtain a permit to stock grass carp. The grass carp are effective in controlling aquatic plants in small water bodies by eating the vegetation. As the grass carp eat the vegetation, the algae will be controlled. Two grass carp have been recommended by the Fish and Wildlife Commission. As soon as the permit is received, two fish will be purchased for the pond. A stainless barrier has been placed at the drain to prevent the fish from entering the storm drain.
Stained sidewalks and curbs: The stain has been removed from the sidewalks and curbs.
Landscaping: The developer is continuing to work with the landscaper and the city to remove and relocate palm trees.
Bar Code Access Reader: Management has received proposals for the bar code reader. The reader will work with the existing gate access system. The scanner will control the entry of vehicles equipped with a bar code by reading the windshield tags inside each registered automobile. The proposals are under consideration and will be acted upon within the next 30 days.
